Training

Welcome to the Edwards Hart Academy, well known for its quality and dedication in education and training consultancy and in the development and delivery of Training.

Our Academy is led by Professor John Edwards, a part time academic of some 30 years standing, but with substantial industry experience and expertise.

Since 2014, we have been providing consultancy services in this area and have produced training resources for a range of organisations that ranges from CITB and CIOB to the European Heritage Academy.

Our consultancy work includes general advice, research, strategies, skills and knowledge needs down to the development of competency schemes, standards and learning resources. Clients have ranged from the Palace of Westminster to the Federation of Master Builders.

Training is one of the most important parts of our business and we deliver training across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe.

We work to the highest professional standards, working to best practice and indeed have led in the development of best practice. Edwards Hart have played a major role in the development of European and British Standards which includes in taking the lead in the development of BS 7913: 2013: Guide to the Conservation of Historic Buildings. We have also contributed to the development of National Occupational Standards for the UK Government in respect of sustainability, energy efficiency, building conservation and retrofit site management.

Professor John Edwards is a former member of the Chartered Institute of Buildings Education, Qualifications, Learning and Practice Board, a former board member of the National Heritage Training Group and a former Chair of the Traditional Building Skills Bursary Scheme management board, as well as a former adviser to Welsh Ministers on training in sustainability and traditional skills.

The Edwards Hart Academy is ideally placed to develop and design training to professional standards based on best practice. We have developed and delivered training for a range of organisations which includes the Federation of Master Builders, the National Trust, Chartered Institute of Building, Historic Environment Scotland, Northern Ireland Government, Construction Industry Training Board, Constructing Excellence Wales and local authorities such as Gloucester City Council.

We have also developed and delivered training for a range of organisations such as the Environment Study Centre, RICS Training, European Heritage Training Academy, Construction Study Centre and the CIOB Academy.

We aim to pass on our knowledge and expertise with a range of courses. In addition to the training and training development services we provide to the Construction Industry Training Board, universities, colleges, our private clients and others, we have developed a programme of courses that can be delivered at your venue, tailored to your specific needs. Please contact us for more information.

The Edwards Hart Academy initially development the 2 Day Traditional Building Retrofit course working with CITB’s National Construction College, and since that time Professor Edwards has been delivering this course through the Environment Study Centre. The Edwards Hart Academy has been working with the Environment Study Centre in developing an ebook ‘Retrofit of Traditional Buildings’, to support the 2 Day course.

Courses we have developed include:

  • Dampness in buildings
  • Energy efficiency and retrofit of traditional buildings – this two-day course delivers a Level 3 Award qualification and was developed with CITB’s National Construction College
  • Building Conservation – a two-day course developed at Level 3 Award standard for the CIOB Academy and is based on ICOMOS (International Council for Monuments and Sites) training and education guidelines.
  • Surveying historic buildings.
  • Energy efficiency of historic buildings
  • Workshop on BS 7913: 2013: Guide to the Conservation of Historic Buildings.
  • Maintaining historic buildings under FM
  • Managing historic buildings.
  • Workshop on BSI PAS 2035: 2019 – the retrofit of all types of UK dwellings
  • Workshop on BSI PAS 2038: 2021 – the retrofit of all types of UK non-domestic buildings

A recent project is the EU funded ‘Pro Heritage Project’ where we are analysing competencies, developing training resources, developing and delivering workshops, and delivering ‘trainer the trainer’ sessions across Europe in the energy efficiency and retrofit of traditional and historic buildings. It has a particular emphasis on the upskilling of tradesmen and women which is similar to a project that we undertook for CITB in 2015.

Our training is delivered through the Environment Study Centre and for all your enquiries contact them here
