EH have used its combined expertise in the management of historic buildings, access and safety along with conservation expertise to provide properly balanced solutions at one of London’s most important historic landmarks, the Grade 1 Listed Somerset House.

The Somerset House Trust has embarked on a program that provides much enhanced public access which includes the ‘New Wing’, which until recently was occupied by the Inland Revenue. EH have been appointed by the Trust to work on the Basement and Mid Basement for two phases of work. This involves an access audit of the whole area, with recommendations on appropriate solutions and another phase that assesses access proposals being made from Victoria Embankment, which will provide input into Listed Building consent applications. EH assesses the impact on significance as part of this process and along with our expertise in the management of buildings operations we come up with well-balanced recommendations.

This service has been led by John Edwards, an acknowledged expert in historic buildings and their use. John says “It has been a great pleasure and honor to work for the Trust, who not only value and respect their site, but go to such lengths to find the most appropriate solutions to increase use and access in the most sensitive way”.
