The Challenge of Surveying Retrofitted Buildings is contained in an article written by Edwards Hart Director John Edwards for the latest edition of the RICS Property Journal. In the article John highlights that traditional buildings which make up one quarter of UK building stock are at risk because they are treated as modern buildings. It also mentions that this problem often commences at the survey stage when inappropriate and unnecessary work is recommended and is usually about damp proofing with vapour barriers. John argues that surveyors need to properly understand dampness in buildings and not to delegate this responsibility to damp proofing contractors. John makes the case that if responsibility is delegated it should be to an independent surveyor that understands traditional buildings and the need for vapour permeability. John hopes that this article will help raise awareness amongst the journals readership and promote a more informed approach that follows BS 7913: 2013.
