The basic ingredients on making traditional buildings energy efficient and the optimum approach to their retrofit is contained in an article written by Edwards Hart Director John Edwards. Titled ‘Energy Efficiency Back to Basics’, this article tells some home trusts about the uninformed approach taken by many and describes what can be done to make buildings more energy efficient in a sustainable way. The article also points out the limitations in following some guidance. Above all else, it expresses the need for proper in-depth condition surveys and taking a building pathological approach as well as gleaning some knowledge of a building’s significance. The article recommends the use of some guidance and tools and in particular the need to follow BS 7913: 2013 and the undertaking of impact assessments in determining the choice of energy efficiency measures and works.
