The first edition of the CIOB Technical Information Sheet series is on the subject of building conservation and is authored by Edwards Hart Director Professor John Edwards. It’s titled ‘Building Conservation – its meaning, understanding and implementation’. The fundamentals of the conservation of buildings are described using work examples and case studies to explain what’s involved in the overall process. Topics covered include inspection and analysis, project development, design, implementation and evaluation and it describes the competencies needed by those working in conservation. In addition, it looks at what’s involved in the daily care and management of traditional and protected buildings. Essentially, it focuses on not only technical issues but on how to understand and deal with heritage values. According to Professor Edwards: “This provides an up to date account of what building conservation is and how its implemented”. Professor Edwards added: “It’s an ideal document to support the CIOB 2 day Understanding Building Conservation course and a must for those applying for certification in building conservation”.
