Professor John Edwards will be speaking at the IHBC (Institute for Historic Building Conservation) Annual School on the new UK standard specification for the retrofit of UK dwellings of all types and ages, known as PAS 2035. This will take place in Nottingham, July 2019. Professor Edwards, a Chartered Environmentalist and one of the UK’s leading experts on the energy efficiency retrofit of traditional buildings is a member of the PAS2035 steering group under the auspices of BSI (British Standards Institution). Professor Edwards said: “It is essential that everyone gets to grips with this new specification and there are lots of issues that our sector will have to deal with as a result of it”. Edwards added: “In my view its not just getting to grips with this new specification that’s important, but proper understanding of technical and heritage issues”.
The production of the Standard has taken over eighteen months and according to Professor Edwards its been a very difficult task, who said: “Without going into detail, almost everyone concerned were from mainstream and had very little idea about traditional buildings, and looking at comments on the websites from some organisations concerned, you can see that they see the provision for pre 1919 buildings as a problem”. Publication of PAS2035 is due in June 2019, upon which Edwards Hart will provide comment and guidance on its understanding and use. Professor Edwards will also be delivering relevant training courses through the Environment Study Centre.
Edwards Hart has substantial experience in the energy efficiency and retrofit of traditional and historic buildings and takes a most holistic approach, whilst deploying the most sophisticated analysis, but this commences with taking a building pathological approach to the existing building along with its heritage values and follows BS7913. These services are led by Edwards Hart Director Professor John Edwards, whose experience of building pathology and sustainable refurbishment goes back to 1981.
John Preston Vice Chair of the Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance (STBA) will jointly address the Annual School with Professor Edwards and present the wider implications of PAS 2035.
