Apprenticeship training could move away from pure new construction to include working on existing buildings, with an emphasis on sustainability and traditional craft skills needed for older buildings.  A CITB Cymru initiative is looking at the feasibility of this major change of emphasis through a pilot project involving three sites in Wales. The NPTC Group with Edwards Hart have been appointed to develop and run the project. Edwards Hart Director John Edwards said: “We must applaud CITB Cymru for taking this initiative, which if successful will pave the way for the building stock of Wales and in particular its older buildings to be treated in a more informed and appropriate way”. Edwards added: “There are also economic benefits with a Welsh construction workforce benefitting from more rounded training and having skills which are so desperately needed across other home nations, where there is no such initiative”.
