It is estimated that more than 1.5 million UK homes are adversely effected by damp and according to the British Standards Institution 80% of building failure relates to moisture. This suggests that we all need to understand moisture in buildings in terms of both theory and practice. Read the article by Edwards Hart Director Professor John Edwards and renowned damp expert Pete Ward and you will see what this needs to mean in practice. The article also considers the risks taken by those that do not properly investigate moisture in buildings prior to retrofitting a building. According to Professor Edwards: ‘Our theoretical knowledge is improving, but without the practical know how on how to put this into practice we will fail to deal with these problems’. Edwards added: ‘For the past eight years I have been running a workshop on this subject, which includes my own case studies and this is the way we can build confidence within individuals to deal with this problem properly and not automatically bring in damp proofing contractors at the outset’. The next workshop on damp in buildings takes place in London on the 21st September and further details are here.
