Edwards Hart are conducting a condition survey of statues and sculpture work at the Grade 1 Listed London landmark for the Somerset House Trust. This involves gauging the difference since the previous survey and recommending treatment and any required repairs. In addition, Edwards Hart are developing a philosophy towards their care including the development of conservation management policies. These are mostly in stone with some in lead and bronze, for which Edwards Hart have engaged metal sculpture expert Rupert Harris. The project lead for Edwards Hart is Professor John Edwards who said: ‘Whilst at English Heritage one of my responsibilities was war memorials and I provided the War Memorials Trust with both technical and philosophical expertise and this was developed from my practical background in masonry and my experience of statues and sculpture with Cardiff Council many years previously’. John added: ‘This provides us with the right type of expertise for this project’. John is also co-author of BS 8221-1:2012: Code of practice for cleaning and surface repair of buildings: Cleaning of natural stone, brick, terracotta and concrete.
