Somerset House is a large Grade 1 Listed Neoclassical historic building originally dating to the 16th century and although having a palatial appearance, it is the UK’s first purpose-built office building. Edwards Hart have been appointed by Somerset House Trust to develop a Conservation Management Plan for this major London landmark. Building upon existing significance analysis, significance values and grades will be articulated, and conservation policies developed. The project is led by Edwards Hart Director Professor John Edwards who said: ‘We bring something extra to these types of projects as our team are not only experts in significance analysis, but we have managed historic buildings and combined with our experience of surveying buildings we can see how inappropriate actions or neglect can have terrible consequences’. Professor Edwards added: ‘This puts us in the ideal position to develop the most appropriate conservation policies which is essential if Somerset House is to reap the full advantage of this major piece of work’. The Conservation Management Plan will provide both informed guidance and a framework for any future development and on-going management and care of the site.
