Last month a new European Standard was published to help those undertaking energy efficiency works to historic buildings and according to Professor John Edwards who sits on the BSI committee for the ‘Conservation of tangible cultural heritage’: Although BS EN 12883: 2017 is an excellent document this should be read in conjunction with BS 7913: 2013 which provides additional information ‘. John added: ‘We have developed the retrofit process around BS 7913 and I can see that there is some good mechanisms in this new Standard to make this process more robust, but for other things such as the need for heritage impact assessments, you need to refer to BS 7913’.

Edwards Hart are currently delivering a series of courses on the energy efficiency and retrofit of traditional buildings for the Environment Study Centre and will immediately include BS EN 16883: 2017: Conservation of Cultural Heritage – Guidelines for improving the energy performance of historic buildings.
